Your Nervous System Creates Your Reality
How to take back control

I spent years not understanding why I kept ending up in the same situations. Different people. Different jobs. Different chapters. Same feeling. There's a reason for that. And once you understand it, you can't unsee it.
Your nervous system doesn't just react to the world. It creates it. From your earliest years, your nervous system builds a template. A map of what's normal. What's safe. What love, respect, success and belonging are supposed to feel like. And then, for the rest of your life, it filters every experience through that map. Not asking: is this healthy? Not asking: is this what I actually want? Just asking: does this feel familiar?
Here's my personal example. Growing up, I didn't experience safe love. What I knew was hot and cold. Love one minute, verbal abuse, and worse, the next. That became my normal. So when I met someone steady and consistent, my body didn't recognise it as love. It felt flat. Almost boring. But chaos? Someone whose love I had to earn? My nervous system lit up. This feels like home. That's the part nobody tells you. Your nervous system doesn't distinguish between familiar and healthy. It just chases what it knows. And if, somewhere along the way, you absorbed the belief that you weren't worthy of safe, consistent love? Your nervous system will quietly, loyally, do everything it can to prove that belief right.
This doesn't just show up in relationships. It shows up everywhere. In the opportunities you don't go after, because somewhere you don't believe you're ready. In the leadership style you default to, because it mirrors what authority looked like growing up. In the salary you accept, because it matches what you unconsciously believe you're worth. In the way you keep burning out, because struggle feels more familiar than ease. Your nervous system doesn't know the difference between your love life and your career. It's running the same programme across all of it.
The patterns you can't shake aren't personality. They're nervous system memory. And here's the part that changes everything: You cannot think your way out of this. Insight helps. But insight alone won't shift what lives in the body. Real change requires going deeper, teaching your nervous system that safety isn't a threat, that you are allowed to have what you say you want, and that a different reality is not just possible but available to you.
